The summary

What if those we’ve lost weren’t gone?

I designed lighting and projection for this production of Hamlet, directed by Caroline Hadley and performed by UWE Drama and Acting students.

Shakespeare’s classic tragedy but with a futuristic twist - what if the dead were still alive in the metaverse?

Gertrude drinks into the night and escapes a marriage of convenience with a VR headset where Hamlet’s father still stands proud. The grief stricken prince reaches through the metaverse to find reassurance; his father’s presence suddenly too real, and strangely difficult to shake. And for Laertes, it holds the chance to see his sister once more.

These digital ghosts tower over the stage, combining 3D scanning, modelling, animation, and projection.

Hamlet was performed at UWE’s Bower Ashton theatre in March 2025 as part of their extra-curricular staff-led productions season.
